What do I do about my dry hair?

Okay, I am 25 years old and I have had EXTREMELY dry and frizzy hair since I was a kid. The only thing that I have found that would help my hair look semi-good is mousse. I have been using it for the last 10 years and I think it is making my hair even worse. I have heard that it is not good to wash your hair everyday, but I have to because I use mousse every day. I am constantly looking for a shampoo and conditioner that would help, but I have been unsuccessful so far. Now I have a daughter who is 6 and she has the same problem. I don't put any kind of product (like mousse) in her hair, though, because I don't want her hair to end up worse like mine. I do, however, wash her hair every other day. It doesn't seem to help, though. Does anyone have any kind of suggestions or home remedies? I have asked hairdressers before, but all they do is try and sell me the items that their salon offers.

Please help!

My hairdresser advised me that when I wash my hair (every other day or every third), don't use shampoo every time, just every other time. She told me that all the other products I use on it are water-soluble and will rinse out without shampoo. She said, rinse very well and add conditioner.

All shampoos are detergent. No matter who makes them or what it says on the bottle. Some are more harsh than others, yes. Rule of thumb: the cheaper the shampoo, the more detergent base. Oh uh, you don't want that. Spend $10 on a mild shampoo and you won't regret it. It lasts as long as the cheap ones (you won't have to use as much), does better things for your hair, ends up costing you less in the long run. (A lesson learned by me over the years).

Mousse contains alcohol. If no alcohol, then it contains another chemical (propellant) to shoot it out of the can that can also dry out your hair. Use a good conditioner every other week (in this case, cheap is the best, it's lighter).

Try vitamins and fish oil tablets to get the oil back into you and your daughter's hair. If she doesn't want to take them, use olive oil in her food intermittently. Your skin must be dry too...this will help both.

Don't buy the Frizz-ease products, they are mostly glycerin. You can buy glycerin at your drugstore for about $3 a bottle and it only takes about a teaspoon on dry or wet hair to give it an excellent shine!

Good Luck!
