How old do I have to be to choose where I want to live? I will be 14 in March.?

I want to live with my girlfriends aunt. I am back living with my mom because she got jealous. I have a good relationship with my"aunt" and her kids. They are like a brother and sister to me, and me to them. My moms boyfriend dumped her and now she is taking out her anger on me. About my mom - on probation for drugs, threatens to bust my mouth open when she is mad at me, spends all the money on gambling, doesn't really care if I am sick, figures I just need to get out of school and get a job. about my "aunt" - tells me I am going to college, threw me the 1st birthday party I ever had, lets me get my hair cut and doesn't make me shave it at home, helps me with my homework, let me play football and showed up for every practice and game, has bought me everything I own to wear, took me to get glasses, treats me like her kid, tells me she loves me without me having to say it first, cares if I'm sick,if she yells at me, its 4 a reason.I love my mom but don't want to live there anymore.

Talk to your aunt and see if she's willing to let you live with her. If she says "Yes", then talk to your Mom as well. Tell your Mom that she's not creating a healthy environment at home for a child to grow up in. Your Mom might become upset and very angry. She may threaten you and threaten your aunt. If she does that, then tell her you will get her in trouble with the authorities (police, social services, whatever) and tell them that she's back on drugs. I know that's mean but basically let her know that she cannot continue making your life miserable by forcing you to live with her since she doesn't take care of you.

I'm not sure at what age you can choose where you want to live, the rules are different from state to state. I can say for sure that 14 is too young in any state.

If you want definite answers, check out the website of the Social Services in your state.

Besides that, I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time with your Mom. You have to walk a very difficult line in this situation. Keep in mind that if your Mom gets arrested or goes to jail, you may end up in foster care. Make sure you play your cards right!!!

YOU NEED TO TELL YOUR AUNT, OR ANY ADULT YOU TRUST. IN SOME STATES16. BUT I THINK YOUR AUNT IS THE BEST ONE TO TALK TO.

I think you are at the age to make up your own mind. If you know the difference in what your mom is doing compared to your aunt. I say you should be old enough. Why don't you try and google the age for your state. Good luck

Try and not isolate you real mom as she needs you too and there might be problems that you might not know about. If she refuses help then go to your aunts.....

Depending on what state/area you live, you could try emancipation, (basically divorcing your parent(s)) but with that you'd have to show the court that you can financially support yourself so, I don't really think that's an option at almost 14. Most states you must be 16 before you can be emancipated, also.

You can contact Child Protective Services (CPS), and show them the situation your mother has you in. She is, by law, neglecting you, and also is endangering you. This will be taken to court if CPS sees these conditions. If your 'aunt' comes forward (during court) and says she want to become your guardian and can provide proof that she is safe, and can financially handle you, then that should more than likely be granted. CPS will have to do an investigation of her and her household, though.

Because she is not your real aunt, you would have to go through this process, and not be able to just choose to live with her.

Good luck!
